We started as peddlers collecting old pots and pans in the thirties, to laborers manually disassembling automobiles in the sixties, to a state of the art automated recycling plants in the new millennia. These are the legacies of the scrap industry. In 1936 three brothers bought their first truck in Fall River, Massachusetts, peddling rags and
collecting scrap metal. Herman, Eddie, and Milton Gitlin saw an opportunity to provide a service to their community and make a living. Together they took hold of their collective futures and through hard work they embodied the entrepreneurial spirit. In those times of economic uncertainty, Mid-City Scrap Iron and Salvage was born.

Herman Gitlin started our company in 1936, in Fall River, MA. He rented a corner lot in the Flint section, and turned the horse barn there into a waste paper and rag shop. He slowly but surely built the business by buying an old truck, hiring his first employees, and extending his dealings by buying and selling metals. Herman's brothers, Eddie and Milton joined Herman after they got out of the army in 1946. Eddie started his own shop in New Bedford, and Milton worked with Herman in Fall River.

In 1951, the brothers bought a piece of land in Westport, MA. It was a defunct old slaughterhouse on the old Route 6 that connects Cape Cod all the way to New York City and points West.

It still startles us that we have become what we are today; still owned by the same family, with it's roots firmly entrenched in the hard working entrepreneurial spirit that started so many decades ago.

Today Mid-City Scrap is located in Westport, Massachusetts, and consisting of a state of the art processing plant and a team of hard working men and women who strive to meet the needs of their families and communities. We are processors of ferrous & non-ferrous metals, and various grades of waste paper and fiber. We process plastics and electronic scrap (E-recyclables) associated with the modern computer era. Our sources of raw-material range from municipalities to Fortune 500 companies to small independent contractors.

Under the leadership of the same family (Herman, Herman's son Louis, and Mark, Eddie's son). We have now evolved into one of the largest scrap processing firms in Southern New England. Some seventy years after our humble beginnings, we work daily to lessen the burdens placed on our environment by turning recyclables into new products.
